I have been in enough leadership positions in my life to understand that it is tempting for leaders to give their feedback based on the reports on their desk – after the job is done.
The danger behind this temptation is that we lose opportunities to appreciate the effort the team provides towards the goal.
I am father of four boys. I have no idea how many times they fell learning to walk. But I can remember their first steps. For example, the first born took 8 steps, before he missed the kitchen door and ended up in the door frame…
You don’t wait until the child can walk before you give your feedback. You support the child as it stumbles. You shout excitedly: «You stood!» even if it was only for 2 seconds. And like me, your applause, honestly, was not in line with the delivery.
The next day we repeated the same exercise. And gradually the child became safer and learned to walk.
It’s the same with us adult.
Correct is a result of a serie of «almost correct».
Leaders, let us celebrate «almost right» on the way to right. Don’t wait for that report. Go out and celebrate «almost right» with your co-workers as the job gets done – better and better – on the way to the goal.
