You talk with style. Do you know which one?

The way you communicate directly affects your team’s dynamics—and of course, the overall productivity and goal achievement.

Being aware of and able to recognize different communication styles is, in my view, essential for effective collaboration.

In any team with a decent number of people and a good mix of perspectives, we’ll likely encounter a range of styles—like these four:

Passive

While it may seem harmless or “nice” to avoid conflict, passive communication can actually lead to frustration and misunderstandings. In a team setting, this can stall decision-making and problem-solving.

Maybe it’s time to gather some courage and speak up a bit more?

Aggressive

Dominating conversations can stifle creativity and create a hostile environment. Although it might come across as confident, it often leads to decreased morale and a lack of trust among team members.

Perhaps you could try pausing yourself a little more often?

Assertive

This is the golden middle ground. Open, honest, and respectful communication builds trust and strengthens collaboration. Assertive team members help create a positive and productive work environment.

If you can find the balance between speaking up and stepping back to give others space, you’ll help your team work in a way that feels safe, clear, and constructive.

Passive-aggressive

Indirect communication creates confusion, resentment, and a toxic atmosphere. It’s important to address this style openly and constructively.

Can you dare to call it out when you see it? Can you receive that feedback if it turns out this style might be yours?

By knowing and recognizing these communication styles, you and your team can build a culture of open dialogue, mutual respect, and genuine understanding.

And remember: effective communication is like a tango—it takes two.
It’s just as much about listening as it is about speaking.
