Puzzle & Pieces

“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan.
And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”

Jim Rohn

Life can feel like a puzzle—one we build piece by piece, bit by bit, toward a clearer picture.
Sometimes it’s hard to find the right pieces.
Other times, the challenge is knowing where they fit to bring greater clarity and meaning to it all.
And few things are more frustrating than discovering you’re missing key pieces in your picture…

What picture are you working on?
What are you piecing together these days?
Do you know which pieces you’re looking for?
Where they belong so that the whole starts to make more sense?

In his book The 5 Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, Jim Rohn outlines five core pieces he believes are essential.
You might identify other priorities in your own life picture—but I think his frame is worth reflecting on.
Rohn must answer for his five.
Here are mine.

Philosophy

Rohn’s first major piece is what he calls philosophy—perhaps we could call it your worldview, your outlook on life?

At the very least, it means thinking. And I mean really thinking.
We must make time to work through the “why” of our lives.
We’ve been given a mind—let’s use it.
We can and should process ideas, impressions, and input before acting on them.

Attitude

We’re affected by how we’re doing. We know this.
But how are we affected?

First, we’re influenced by what we know—the knowledge we’ve taken in.
Then, we’re affected by what we do—the choices we make.
And also by the choices others make that impact us.
Layered over all of this are the emotions tied to what we know, what we do, and what’s done to us.

And then comes the X-factor:
Our attitude—our stance toward the situation we’re facing.
That stubborn hope some people seem to carry in their pocket no matter what life throws at them.
They don’t just survive—they live through it.

Reflect for a moment:
What’s your attitude toward your own past?
Toward the chapters you’d rather not read out loud?

Are you dragging yourself through today—and into tomorrow—with the weight of past mistakes?
Exhausting, isn’t it?

And what’s your attitude toward the days ahead?
Toward the people you live and work with now?

We need to cultivate strong, generous attitudes toward both ourselves and others.
Because today is connected to yesterday and tomorrow.
And life is something we live together.
We shape each other. We need each other.

Good attitudes are like oil in an engine.
They make both the uphill and downhill stretches smoother.

Action

This is the work piece in our life picture.
Without it, philosophy and attitude remain noble thoughts that never take shape.

When we connect our worldview and our attitude to action—when we live what we believe—something good, something beautiful, can take shape in and through our lives.

It’s the earthly version of a miracle.

There are two principles here:
Do what you can. Do it as well as you can.

Incredible things can happen when you connect thought, mindset, and movement.
Try it.
It may just be beautiful.

Results

This is the piece many people leave out.
We put in the effort—but shy away from looking closely at how it’s really going.

Without that reflection, we stop solving the puzzle and start rolling dice.
We risk missing out on our best picture simply because we didn’t dare to measure, weigh, or course-correct.

Wasted.
That’s not a word I want to hear at the end of my life.

So I place mirrors in my life.
I’ve made a promise to myself: if I bump into myself in any doorway—I’ll stop. I’ll look.
And I’ll ask:

“Hey. Who have you become? What are you doing right now, really? Is this working for you?
Honestly?”

Changed.
That’s a word I’m convinced every person can grow into.
Sometimes, we just need help to create the conditions for new and better choices to emerge.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle isn’t something you’re born with.
It’s not “done” or “delivered.”
It’s a lifelong project—always in progress.

Your lifestyle is shaped by the teamwork of your philosophy, your attitude, and your actions.
And also by the feedback loop of results—if you’re willing to include that piece.

If you hold up the mirror and greet yourself when life confronts you.
At the door. Or against the wall.

That means you can take the wheel.
You can influence the tone and shape of your life.

And I’m not talking about chasing wealth or fame.
Life is far more interesting than that.

My point is:
You can choose your worldview.
You can form and reform your attitudes.
You do choose your actions—and take responsibility for them, even in life’s toughest passages.

You can assess your outcomes and evaluate whether they align with your intentions—
and if not, you can adjust your course.

You can avoid the word wasted.
And grow into the word changed.

You hold all of that. Always.

Of course, we’re not the only ones at the puzzle table.
Other people’s outlooks, attitudes, actions, and expectations shape us too.

Sometimes they challenge us.
Sometimes they knock over the pieces we were just about to place.

Yes. That happens.

But still—you have more than enough agency to shape your life with your own colors and contours.
Your own style.
Your own picture.

I’m cheering you on.
You can change so much—one piece at a time.
