It’s no real innovation unless it ‘s an implemanted one

In my daily job, I work as Chief Business Development Officer in Motitech AS. Some years ago I led a multi-site research project for our company, in Canada. What a ride it was!

Lee Verweel, Health research at WestPark Health Care Centre, Canada, took part in Motitech’s Multi-site research project (2017-19). His view on how we as the Innovator approach and served the research team and the participants, makes me humble and glad.

Cause this is who we are as Social Entrepreneurs: Heart first. Always!

We´d say: “There is no real innovation before it is a well implemented innovation”. Together with our partners, participants and their support team, we succeed big time increasing physical activity, cognitive stimulation and social connectedness!

Now I will let Lee talk, and we, as Social Entrepreneurs, promise to do the walk… Because the real heroes and the real know-how are with the end-users and their support team; the staff, their volunteers and relatives.

What Lee says about the project

«It’s satisfying when innovation projects lead to positive and tangible change.

Motiview was funded as an innovation initiative – co-led by our team at West Park. Although it was structured as a multi-site research project – marrying innovation and research agendas was a daunting task!

This is one of those rare innovation projects that started as a funded grant and successfully transitioned into program operations. A few things the innovator did really well:

  1. Co-design with residents and staff: at the start of the project – the innovator spent hours with residents to identify meaningful locations to film – adding to their already extensive library. This included local places where LTC residents had lived, experienced childhood vacations or even walked their dog on a regular basis. During the project the residents were ecstatic to see these recommendations come to life!
  2. Understanding the local context: the innovators valued the importance of understanding the factors that may enhance or affect their intervention. Like which staff members would be helping residents with the Motiview – and how these staff structured their time and programming. Spending time understanding the staff, existing programming and local context allowed the innovators to meet the unique needs of residents.
  3. Defining the unique value of the intervention: last but not least – the innovators knew how the Motiview would impact residents. They were able to describe in detail how their intervention worked and the impact it would have on users. Sometimes new technologies or start ups are hazy on this piece – but the Motiview team had observed outcomes in previous work. It helped to identify the evaluation objectives for the project and resulted in a clearer value proposition at the end of the project.

In the end, the research rigor embedded in this project helped to add credibility but was secondary to user feedback. Procurement of the innovation was led by the residents who were advocating to continue with Motiview after the innovation funding ended.»

What Lee sees 5 years after the project

A video from WestPark five years !!! after the project: WestPark Long Term Care Centre uses Motiview on a daily basis (2024).

What a ride it is! A true Innovation is an implemented innovation.
