Effective communication

1. Learn to listen

Effective communication rests entirely on the ability to listen – which in turn builds mutual understanding between people.

2. Be conscious of unconscious communication

What you post and comment on social media becomes, for others, something that represents you. And these pieces of others’ perception of you never disappear! That’s why it’s good to be consciously aware of unconscious communication; that you try to behave appropriately smart regarding what you post and what you comment on social media.

3. Know your audience!

We are all unique. This also means we communicate in different ways based on an individual’s preferred behavioral style, motivation, and EQ. When you are able to assess the recipients of your message, you can better adapt how you convey it most effectively.

4. Understand the need

To effectively share information, it must be concrete and clear. In other words, well-defined. It can then be helpful to have thought through three questions:

  • What are you trying to communicate?
  • Who is the recipient?
  • What is the purpose?

5. The power of non-verbal communication

The use of your voice, its pace, strength, eye contact, and hand gestures – all contribute to the message, consciously or unconsciously. I recommend that you use non-verbal communication consciously to reinforce the message you are actually trying to convey…

Good communication is a key to success in working life and life in general. Effective communication is much more than what we actually say or write. The old adage still gives good advice: “We have two ears and one mouth for a reason!” If we listen twice as much as we speak, a lot of good can be done in terms of communication.
