Through decades I have walked alongside people. As coach. It is a true honour. It is hard work. And a joyful journey. Oh, how beautiful we are; humans!
But… what is a good coach? What makes an exceptional coach? While many factors contribute to the answer, still I do believe three key qualities set the best apart.

Great coaches help you see your challenges clearly. Many enter coaching with vague or inaccurate understandings of their struggles. A skilled coach doesn’t just diagnose problems—they teach you to think more clearly about your own experiences.

- Their insights lead to real understanding, not just feel-good affirmations.
- Over time, you gain a deeper, clearer sense of your own challenges.
2. Empathy
Empathy goes beyond being nice or supportive—it’s about deep understanding. Great coaches can step into your perspective without judgment, accurately sensing emotions and communicating that understanding effectively.
How to spot a coach with true empathy:
- They display intense curiosity about your experiences.
- They reflect your thoughts and feelings with accuracy.
- They engage with you in a way that feels both personal and insightful.
3. Courage
Sometimes, real growth requires difficult conversations. Good coaches are willing to challenge their clients, even when it’s uncomfortable. We risk tension or even losing you as client to provide honest, constructive feedback that leads to meaningful change.
